Does a heftier price tag guarantee a better-tasting Easter egg? In a world where the shelves are brimming with options ranging from budget-friendly supermarket brands to premium chocolatiers, making the right choice can be overwhelming.
We bought three supermarket-own eggs from Lidl, Aldi and Morrisons and four branded eggs including Cadbury, Lindt, Thorntons and Maltesers. Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons was the cheapest at £1.25 and the most expensive was £12 from Lindt.
The contenders
Cadbury Dairy Milk Buttons, Maltesers, Aldi Dairyfine Cookies & Cream, Lidl Fudge Biscuit Blast. Morrisons ‘The Best’ Milk & Blonde Chocolate, Thorntons Continental and Lindt Gold Bunny.

The taste test
We asked the brave souls at MoneyPlus to blind taste test seven eggs, each with a different price tag. It’s a hard job, but someone had to do it.
We wanted to crack the mystery – do you need to spend a basketful to bag yourself a tasty egg?
We labelled the eggs from A to G and rushed to the recycling bin to dispose of the packaging.
We asked our taste-testers two questions:
- Which Easter egg do you think is the tastiest?
- Which Easter egg do you think is the most expensive?
The results
And the winners are…
Morrisons and Aldi! These supermarket chains have taken our taste buds by storm, beating the likes of Lindt and Thorntons on taste and quality.

So, is it worth shelling out more?
Our taste test uncovered a sweet truth – delicious chocolate doesn’t have to break the bank. And it looks like MoneyPlus’ own Chief Commercial Officer, Jonathan, is on the same page. “F. F wins everything” he said. He’s probably making a beeline for Aldi as we speak.
On the flip side, Chief Financial Officer, Mike Hutton, wasn’t impressed. After sampling some of Aldi’s Dairyfine Cookies & Cream egg, he looked at Jonathan and said, “it’s basic and bland, just like you.”
Classic office banter.
Adding an interesting twist, Aldi received 12 votes for ‘the most expensive’ with Lindt closely following with 11.
Yet it was Morrisons ‘The Best’ Milk & Blonde Chocolate that stole the show as ‘the tastiest’ with 20 votes – and it’s one of the more affordable options.
This goes to show that pricier doesn’t always mean better quality (either that, or our taste buds just aren’t up to scratch).
So, if you’re wanting to save this Easter but not be beaten on the price and quality, Morrisons and Aldi are your go-to spots.
